Phong as a Reader/Writer
Phong is not a reader. However, she knows what it takes for someone to learn to read. She believes people learn to read by first learning how to talk. Once they learn what different words sound like, they are able to sound them out while reading. People read because it can be enjoyable, relaxing, and educational. Phong thinks it's amazing what fantasies lie in between the covers of a book. It's also a great getaway for some people. She says that reading stories about other peoples' lives and problems can sometimes make readers forget about their own problems. In order to be a good reader, Phong thinks one should set a goal for how many books to read every month. By consistently reading your mind gets more familiar with vocabulary and comprehension. Phong also thinks that if you don't know a word you should look it up so you have a full understanding of what the book is talking about and so you are familiar with it if it comes up again. The easy part of reading for Phong is getting hooked on a book. She prefers fictional books so she can use her imagination on what the characters and settings look like. The hardest part of reading for Phong is comprehension. A lot of what she reads is in one ear and out the other. She chooses books to read by finding an author she really likes, and finding other books with a similar style of writing or theme. Phong usually gravitates towards fictional books. She likes books that she can relate to as a teen, but also enjoys reading books with supernatural characters. Phong goes through phases where she will read a lot at home, but then will stop for a period time. In order for her to read a lot, she has to really be interested in the book. In general, Phong doesn't usually like reading school assigned books. She does however enjoy reading books of her choosing.
Phong is more of a writer than a reader. She isn't outstanding at it, but she enjoys it more. Phong learned to write particularly in Mrs. Gilbert's honors english 9 class. Mrs. Gilbert taught her all about theses and 5 paragraph essays which really helped her in the long run. Phong thinks people write to express themselves, share ideas, and for pure enjoyment. She believes a person doesn't need much to be a good writer! Phong thinks that as long as someone is willing and able to open their mind and use creativity to put their ideas on paper, they are capable of being a good writer. However, grammar and spelling will come in handy too! She likes to write research essays and opinion pieces. Phong likes research essays because she learns a lot about a specific topic of her choice and she enjoys opinion pieces because there isn't a right or wrong answer. She's able to state her beliefs without being judged on whether her beliefs are politically correct or not. Phong decides what she is going to write about by making an outline, then deciding whether or not her idea is viable or not. She draws ideas from her interests and past experiences. Phong loves peer editing. It helps her see errors from another person's point of view. She loves seeing her work written all over and marks everywhere; it makes her feel satisfied after the corrections are applied. Phong doesn't write at home. She enjoys writing for school assignments but isn't the type of person to be able to sit down and write a creative story for fun. In general, she feels good about what she writes. She enjoys having an individual style of writing. That's why Phong doesn't believe in comparative grading, but she believes in noting a certain student's style and basing the grade off of that.
She may not be a reader or a great writer, but Phong wants, and is willing to, learn and grow from this class.
