This week we analyzed the poem, "Cross" and read an excerpt on literary fictions vs. commercial fiction. We did multiple activities and exercises to read deeper into the poem and excerpt.
We used the TPCASTT system again to analyze the poem, as well as discussed it in small groups. We then shared our ideas to the class. I think doing this because it I like hearing the different points of views from other people. It usually tends to change my opinion or perspective on the meaning of the poem because I hear ideas that I didn't think of, but can relate to. My participation in the learning process for this poem analysis would be good because I talked with my group about the symbolic and rhetorical meanings, as well as overall sharing my opinions towards it with them. I still need to work on finding a deeper meaning in a poem. It's hard for me to think of a hidden message, until I hear what other people thought. I think sometimes I just take the poem too literal. It all comes with practice and time though!
While reading the excerpt on literary fiction vs commercial fiction, I found myself disagreeing with a lot of the 'facts' in the excerpt. A specific example of this was when the author was talking about how in commercial fiction, the reader expects a happy ending and all the loose ends are tied, and in literary fiction, the end is sudden and the reader has to infer the ending. I don't agree with this because a lot of commercial fiction novels have the reader shocked by an unexpected twist, and sometimes are even left to infer the ending of the story. I don't think you can categorize an entire genre by saying all commercial fiction novels have a satisfying and happy ending. My participation during this exercise was good because each member of our group read a part of the excerpt, and then we shared the important details of that section with one another.
