This week, the poems we focused on had pretty similar ideas to them. Sonnet XX (My ugly love) was a poem written by Pablo Neruda, where the speaker describes something ugly about his love, followed by something beautiful. This poem showed that the speaker loved his "ugly love" because of her flaws. This differed slightly from Sonnet 130 (My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun) by William Shakespeare because the speaker in Shakespeare's poem used almost the entire poem to insult his love. After analyzing both of these poems, I learned that the universal truths are basically identical. Even though each portrayed this universal truth in different ways, both poems were saying that once you fall in love it's the flaws that you fall in love with. We shared our ideas about each of the poems by breaking off into small groups and discussing them, and then coming together as a class to share our overall thoughts and ideas. I like doing this when analyzing poetry because it's cool to hear all the different perspectives that maybe I hadn't thought of before.
We also continued our Shakespearean drama project. After deciding on our critical theory of mythological/archetypal for the play "Macbeth" we had to go more in depth on how that critical theory applies to the play. I don't know much about how it relates so far, because we just started watching the plays in class. I know that the witches that are dressed like nuns will be easy to write about and apply the mythological critical theory to.
My participation this week was good because I worked well with my team to start the project and I discussed the PoW with my group. I thought we all shared ideas and input on what critical theory and what play we should pick.
