This week we analyzed the poem, "Barbie Doll" by Marge Piercy. This poem was relatively easy to understand and I really enjoyed it. The message was powerful, and is very relatable to girls everywhere. Just by reading the title, we can assume what the poem will be about. Barbies are unrealistic representations of what women are "supposed" to look like. Little girls believe that's how society wants them to be. I believe this is a huge part in why so many girls are insecure about their looks and bodies. The fact that the girl in the poem was striving so hard for society's approval that she killed herself was so sad, although realistic. Even after she died, the narrator was saying how at least she looked pretty in the casket, and finally felt content with herself even if it meant taking her own life. This issue is very real and still exists all around us.
We also read the play, "Antigone" this week. This play is taken place after "Oedipus the King" as the main character, Antigone, is Oedipus's daughter. Creon is the new reining king, and demands that one of Antigone's brothers, who were both fighting for the crown but ended up dead, were buried (not at fault) and the other to rot in a field (at fault). Antigone felt this was an unacceptable fate for her brother to rot in a field and buries him herself. However, Creon was unhappy she disobeyed him and sentenced her to a tomb underground until death, essentially. Tiresias warns Creon that the Gods are unhappy with Antigone's death sentence, but he doesn't listen. Due to this decision, Antigone hangs herself in the tomb. Her fiance and Creon's son, Haemon, finds Antigone in the tomb and is so upset he kills himself. Haemon's mother and Creon's wife finds her son dead and then kills herself as well. Ultimately, everyone that Creon loved had died. Overall, this play was boring at parts but still pretty good.
My participation this week was alright. It wasn't as good as in past weeks, because I didn't feel all that engaged into the play while we were reading it in class. I didn't have a part to read aloud, nor did I want one, but I felt like my thoughts wondered at times. However, I really liked analyzing the PoW! I thought the message was really powerful and I liked how it was straightforward and easy to understand.
